Industry Pioneers: Markus Persson, Minecraft

Markus Persson, aka Notch, is a Swedish video game programmer and designer. At the age of 7, he started programming on his dad’s Commodore 128 home computer, and produced the first text-based adventure game at the ripe age of 8. While co-founding the company Mojang with Carl Manneh and Jakob Porser in 2010, he created the best selling game Minecraft. After Minecraft’s success, which received several awards as a video game, he went on to win several awards himself.

Statistics:

  • Minecraft received five awards from the 2011 Game Developers Conference
  • Minecraft has sold over 35 million copies across all platforms
  • Minecraft is an open world game that has no specific goals, but allows the user to choose how they want to play it
  • Persson began developing Minecraft as an independent project
  • Minecraft was released to the public in May 2009

Graphics wise, the game has received wide spread praise from a variety of critics for its complexity and unique, blocky effects that makes it a good open world game for kids of all ages.
